Mechanic Working in Wellington

Under the sodium-orange spill of a streetlamp on a damp Wellington laneway, a mechanic leans over the open hood of a battered Holden Commodore. His heavy leather work gloves rest on the fender next to an open, rust-streaked toolbox, the metal tools catching the harsh artificial glare. Rain slicks the asphalt, reflecting the red taillights of a passing bus further down the road. The scene is intimate and lived-in, focusing on the mechanical reality of the night rather than any decorative still life. One, bent garden shear lies half-hidden in a puddle near the tire, ignored by the worker who is wiping grease from his hands with a rag.
