Mantelpiece Photos and Lavender in Evening Light

Honeyed evening light spills across a wooden mantelpiece, casting long, sharp shadows that stretch toward the left edge of the frame. Three framed family photographs stand in a row, their glass surfaces reflecting the soft glow of the low sun. Beside them, a small bundle of dried lavender rests on the wood, its dusty purple stems against the warm grain of the shelf. The light falls through the window, illuminating dust motes that hover in the air above the objects. Outside the window, dramatic clouds gather in shades of slate and gold, suggesting the turn of seasons. The wooden frame of the nearest photo catches a highlight, at the base of the composition in tangible reality.
