Lijiang Flea Market Junk Dealer Sorting Hardware
by Alison Hahn
Indigo twilight blankets the market aisle beside a steaming fish counter in Lijiang. A vendor sorts piles of salvaged brass fittings and rusted bolts across a weathered wooden table. Wisps of cooking smoke drift horizontally through the air, partially obscuring the background stalls. The late spring light offers no direct sun, only a deep blue ambient glow that reflects off wet scales and oily metal. Steam rises in soft columns from the counter, mixing with the indigo haze. The dealer's hands move over the hardware, fingers brushing against the cold, textured surfaces of the discarded items. A faint reflection of a distant lantern glints on a polished brass gear resting near the table's edge.
