Warm candlelight pools across a metal cart piled high with returned books inside a Kunming school laboratory. The flame casts a steady orange glow against the cool white of overhead fluorescent fixtures. Dust particles hang suspended in the narrow shafts of light cutting through the still air. The cart sits on a linoleum floor marked with scuff lines, positioned beside empty laboratory benches. Early summer light filters faintly through high windows, barely competing with the intimate warmth of the candles. One book lies open on the top shelf, its pages illuminated by the nearest flame, while shadows stretch long across the metal wheels.
