An inventory scanner sits on a weathered concrete ledge beneath a corrugated metal awning, catching the pale orange glow of early morning. The glass door behind the device is slightly ajar, revealing a dim interior while daylight bleaches the edges of the frame. Thin paper leaflets lie scattered on the pavement, caught mid-drift by a sudden gust that lifts their corners. The metal housing of the scanner reflects the gray sky, showing faint smudges from daily use. Across the street, temporary barricades line the curb, their orange and white stripes visible against the dull winter pavement.
