Kilim Merchant Unrolling Rugs in Naples
by Maya Shaw
Early morning light falls through heavy overcast skies, casting the vaulted corridor into deep shadow while a sharp rim of pale daylight defines the edges of the stone arches. A merchant, dressed in a worn jacket, stands beside a wooden auction bench, his hands gripping the corner of a woven kilim. The rug unfurls across the rough concrete floor, revealing intricate geometric patterns in faded indigo, rust, and ochre. The texture of the wool fibers is coarse and dense, catching the faint ambient glow. Beside the bench, stacked bales of fabric rest against the damp stone wall, their surfaces cool and matte under the gray light. The merchant's knuckles press into the fabric, lifting the heavy weave slightly off the ground. A thin line of silver dust glimmers on the edge of the stone counter where the rug touches the wood.
