Under the heavy amber wash of a Tokyo summer evening, a narrow alleyway in Yanaka reveals a cluttered repair shop front. A mechanic’s hand, smeared with grease, holds a silver wrench against the chassis of a compact kei car, the tool catching the streetlamp’s glare. Beside the vehicle, a weathered pegboard hangs on the brick wall, studded with an assortment of rusted hooks and faded price tags. A small, chipped porcelain bowl with hairline crazing sits on a nearby wooden crate, holding spare bolts and a half-empty canister of oil.
