Under the deepest night sky, the Johannesburg horizon is defined by the dense cluster of high-rise apartment blocks in Hillbrow. One window in a distant tower glows with the warm, narrow beam of a book light, cutting through the darkness and revealing a reader inside. The rest of the building facade is dark concrete and shadowed balconies, against the faint city glow on the horizon.
