Jhelum Sanitation Crew Vines Dawn in at a crosswalk by a school gate in Jhelum

Jhelum Sanitation Crew Vines Dawn

by Beatrice Marks

Thick, emerald jungle vines drape heavily across the upper right quadrant of a Jhelum school gate, obscuring half the brickwork and spilling over the asphalt. Municipal sanitation workers in high-visibility vests lift heavy sacks of wet, brown leaves into the open rear of a white truck. Mist rests on the low-hanging clouds, diffusing the pale dawn light across the wet pavement. The vines, impossible in their rapid growth, wrap around the metal gate and the truck's bumper, their glossy surfaces reflecting the gray sky. Sweat beads on the workers' foreheads as they coordinate their movements against the encroaching greenery. One vine root cracks the concrete curb near the front tire, anchoring the surreal intrusion into the mundane morning routine. The scene balances the urgent labor of the crew with the overwhelming, silent takeover of the wild vegetation.
