Jewel Toned Silk Stacks at Guadalupe Market in under a market canopy in Guadalupe

Jewel Toned Silk Stacks at Guadalupe Market

by Bruce Wiley

Vivid emerald, deep ruby, and sapphire silk bolts rest in tight, horizontal stacks beneath a weathered canvas canopy in Guadalupe. Late morning tropical light pierces the fabric roof, illuminating floating particles of spice dust that hang in the warm, still air. The smooth, lustrous surfaces of the textiles catch the glare, creating sharp highlights against the matte texture of the burlap sacks nearby. Heat seems to warp the visual field slightly, distorting the edges of the vibrant folds. Fine granules of turmeric and chili powder settle on the lower edges of the fabric, against the clean, dyed threads. A sliver of bright blue sky peeks through the gap between the canopy supports.
