Iron Gate in Valparaiso
by Kiara Meyer
The steep, corrugated zinc roof of a historic Valparaíso funicular station gleams under the deepening blue twilight, reflecting the cool ambient light against the warm, saturated orange of a nearby stucco wall. Below, on a narrow, rain-slicked pedestrian staircase, a local resident pauses to adjust a heavy iron garden gate, its rusted hinges catching the last faint reflections of streetlamps. A faded, peeling sign in Spanish hangs crookedly above, while a lone, empty rattan chair sits abandoned on a small landing, its woven texture rough against the smooth, wet stone steps. The vertical tension of the city, where domestic clutter meets industrial decay, framed by the soft, diffuse glow of the approaching night.
