Hanging Laundry in Beijing

First light after rain washes the Hutong alley in a cool, diffuse gray, reflecting off the slick red brick walls of traditional courtyard homes. A man in a faded blue work jacket stands on a metal stepladder, hanging wet laundry on a line strung between two weathered wooden pillars. Below him, a plastic laundry basket overflows with damp linens, its bright blue color against the muted tones of the wet pavement. Pigeons scatter from the eaves, their wings catching the faint glow of the overcast sky.
