Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast midday in Bologna, a narrow passage between ochre stucco buildings reveals a small, cluttered grocery counter. A vendor’s hands, dusted with flour, arrange a stack of ceramic mugs near a glass display case, while a few paperbacks lie face-down on the counter beside a crumpled receipt. Outside, the damp pavement reflects the gray sky, and a pair of bright yellow raincoats hangs from a hook on the exterior wall, their plastic surface catching the weak light. Dappled leaf shadows from a nearby plane tree stretch across the rough plaster facade, against the smooth, wet stone of the street.
