Orange low-angle sunlight spills across a temporary reading room set up on the green lawn in Soweto. Scuffed wooden desks and metal folding chairs form a makeshift study hall where open books rest on worn surfaces. Notebooks lie flat, their pages held open by the weight of the covers or small stones. Students sit with backs to the camera, their focus fixed on the text before them. The late spring grass grows tall around the chair legs, and the warm light casts long, sharp shadows across the paper and wood. A stack of notebooks rests on the nearest desk, their spines cracked from use. at the edge is the edge of a page curling slightly in the dry air.
