A weathered canal lock in Venice stands under the flat glare of noon, its crumbling stone walls showing signs of age and water damage. The wooden gates are rotten and askew, hanging loosely on rusted hinges, revealing the murky green water behind them. A few seagulls perch on the uneven stonework, their white feathers stark against the grey and brown tones of the decay.
