Gate And Terracotta Bowl in Amman

by Joanne Mooney

Under the harsh, flat glare of noon, a narrow alley in Amman’s Jabal Al-Weibdeh district reveals a wall of faded ochre stucco peeling to expose rough limestone beneath. A faded blue metal gate, rusted at the hinges, stands slightly ajar, revealing a shadowed interior where a single terracotta bowl rests on a wooden stool, catching no direct light. Above, a tangle of wild ivy vines climbs the brickwork, their green leaves contrasting sharply with the sun-bleached paint. To the right, a white plastic bottle sits on a low concrete ledge, half-hidden by the shadow of an overhanging balcony.
