Fresh Juice in Oaxaca

Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast midday, a street vendor in Oaxaca balances a heavy ceramic jar of freshly squeezed fruit juice on his wooden cart. Condensation beads densely on the exterior of the glass, catching the gray sky, while a plastic straw rests against the rim. Behind him, stacked terracotta bowls and colorful plastic cups sit ready for service, their vibrant reds and yellows popping against the muted stone wall of the colonial building. A customer’s hand reaches into the frame, offering coins, at the base of the scene in a quick, everyday transaction. The wet pavement reflects the soft light, showing the textures of the rough ceramic and smooth glass.
