Food Stall in Hanoi
by Stacey Tran
Cool morning mist rests on the narrow alleyway in Hanoi as a vendor arranges steaming bamboo baskets of banh mi on a low wooden counter. In the immediate foreground, a cluster of blue plastic stools sits empty beside a chipped enamel basin, while further back, a customer in an ao dai waits patiently near the open shutter of a bakery. The scene is anchored by the distinct red brickwork of the colonial-era building, its weathered facade marked by Vietnamese signage and tangled electrical wires overhead. A sudden gust lifts the corner of a striped awning, revealing a glimpse of the gray sky and causing one drop of condensation to fall from a metal pipe onto the pavement below.
