Folding Stools in Guadalajara
by Quentin Byrd
The pale, cool light of early morning spills across a weathered stucco facade in Guadalajara, highlighting a cluster of bright orange plastic folding stools stacked precariously against a peeling turquoise doorframe. The rough, cracked texture of the exterior wall contrasts sharply with the smooth, molded surfaces of the stools, while a faded, hand-painted sign in Spanish curls slightly at the edges above the entrance. To the left, a narrow alleyway recedes into shadow, revealing glimpses of corrugated metal roofing and tangled electrical wires that crisscross the sky. One drop of condensation rests on the rim of a ceramic planter sitting on the lowest step, catching the first direct beam of sunlight.
