Bright late morning light slices through the canopy of a Table Mountain fringe tree, casting dappled leaf shadows on the pale plaster wall of a Bo-Kaap house. Below, a weathered workbench holds a cluster of local tools: a rusted wrench rests beside a cake knife used for trimming floral stems, while a caster wheel from a rolling cart leans against a crate of fresh cherries. A florist’s hand, dusted with lint on dark fabric, reaches in to adjust a bundle of proteas. The gritty intersection of maintenance and beauty, where the rough textures of metal and stone contrast with the delicate petals and smooth fruit, all lit by the harsh, clear light of a Cape Town summer day.
