Florist Packing Stalls in Recife Wind
by Norman York
Hard afternoon glare cuts through humid haze above a Recife street corner, casting sharp shadows across wet pavement. A florist gathers wilted bouquets and plastic wrapping into a large sack, their movements stiff against the gusting wind. Behind them, the fluorescent glow of a convenience store contrasts with the natural gray sky. The street curves away, marked by faded white lines that guide toward the distant traffic. Tattered petals scatter on the ground, caught in the eddies of air swirling around the vendor's boots. A plastic bag flutters violently from a nearby pole, tethered by a thin string. The vendor's jacket sleeves are rolled up, revealing forearms dusted with pollen and dirt. A shimmer of moisture hangs between the storefront glass and the street. One red rose lies face down in a puddle near the curb.
