The box, carved with subtle grain, holds stacks of cream-colored cards with gold foil names, now still after the evening rush. Outside the frosted window, winter darkness presses against the glass, while the interior walls wear deep charcoal tones that absorb the low glow. A heavy velvet curtain frames the view, creating a tight aperture that isolates the box from the long hallway stretching behind. Shadows rest on the baseboards, showing the stillness of the pre-dawn hours. The gold lettering on the nearest card catches a faint reflection, marking the edge of the wood.
