Favela Wall in Rio De Janeiro in in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Favela Wall in Rio De Janeiro

by Olivia Blake

Wet asphalt in a Rio favela alley reflects the pale, diffuse sky as a cyclist in a bright yellow vest pedals past a cluster of vibrant majolica tiles adorning a whitewashed wall. The crazed glaze of the tiles catches the damp light, against the rough, unpainted concrete steps nearby. A simple metal stair rail runs diagonally through the frame, leading toward a doorway where a worn door mat lies flat on the slick pavement. The scene is alive with the sheen of recent rain, showing the saturated colors of local architecture against the gray, wet ground. No pedestrians are visible, only the motion of the rider and the static, colorful texture of the home’s exterior.
