Endless Beauty Shelf in Berbera Dawn
by Susan Colon
Cool window light spills across a centered beauty supply shelf inside a nail studio in Berbera, illuminating rows of nail polish bottles and manicure tools. A magnifying lamp stands rigid beside the display, its metal arm casting a sharp, geometric shadow against the pale wall. The dry season air is still, leaving the surfaces dust-free and gleaming. Behind the shelf, a corridor extends visibly farther than the building structure that contains it, the walls stretching into an impossible, repeating distance that defies the room's physical limits. The light remains consistent along this impossible length, illuminating the endless tiles and shelves with the same predawn clarity. The floor reflects the cool blue of the morning sky, at the base of the surreal extension in tangible reality. One bottle of red polish sits at the very edge of the nearest shelf, its label facing outward.
