Enamel Bowls in Palermo

Winter noon light floods through a high, barred window in a Palermo kitchen, illuminating a row of chipped enamel bowls resting on a stained wooden counter. The bowls, in faded cobalt and cream, catch the sharp edge of the sun while their curved surfaces reflect the peeling yellow stucco of the adjacent wall. Behind the counter, a wire rack holds drying pasta sheets, and a small ceramic saint statue sits near a window sill cluttered with dried chili peppers. One drop of water rests on the rim of the frontmost blue bowl, refracting the bright outdoor light into a tiny, distorted circle.
