Drying Rack in Cusco
by Jasper Mills
A wet cobblestone alley in Cusco glows under the deep blue twilight, centered on a traditional adobe wall where a wooden drying rack leans against the rough stucco. Damp wool textiles hang from the rack, their heavy fibers absorbing the ambient light while water droplets rest on the coarse weave and drip onto the uneven stone below. To the right, a small ceramic fountain with crazed majolica glaze reflects the faint street lamps, its turquoise tiles contrasting sharply with the dark, shadowed recess of the doorway. One drop of water falls from the rim of the fountain, catching a glint of neon pink from a distant sign as it strikes the basin's surface.
