Dog Gazing in Boston

Mist rests on the brick facade of a Cambridge row house, softening the red clay and mortar in the pale dawn light. A small Croatian Sheepdog stands on a wet sidewalk, its shaggy black-and-white coat damp and matted, looking up at a second-story window where a blue and white porcelain jar sits on a sill. The jar reflects the gray sky, its glaze slick against the rough brick. Below, a newspaper lies face down on the pavement, its ink bleeding slightly into the damp paper. The dog’s ears twitch, alert to a distant siren.
