Diner Reading in Singapore

Under the harsh sodium glare of a Singaporean hawker center at night, a solitary diner sits on a plastic stool, his attention fixed not on the food but on a stack of paperback books resting beside his empty saucepan. The steam rising from the bowl creates a soft haze against the dark, water-stained tile grout of the partition wall behind him. Neon signs from adjacent stalls cast a rhythmic blue and red spill across the table, reflecting off the wet surface and highlighting the spine of a worn novel.
