Dawn Light Through Glass Atrium Baghdad Palms in inside a vaulted atrium near Baghdad

Dawn Light Through Glass Atrium Baghdad Palms

by Elizabeth Foley

Pale silver dawn light falls through the high vaulted glass ceiling of a botanical garden atrium near Baghdad. Low-hanging clouds obscure the sky, diffusing the morning glow into a soft, uniform wash across the interior. Massive palm trees rise from the earth floor, their rough, textured trunks positioned beside heavy concrete supports and weathered steel framing. Dust settles on the wide walkways where the ground meets the plant bases. Shadows stretch long across the floor, defined by the angle of the rising sun behind the thick cloud layer. A metal railing along the upper gallery reflects the gray light without glinting. Rough concrete surfaces sit adjacent to the smooth glass panels, while the fronds of the late summer palms extend upward toward the vaulted apex.
