The winter noon light is flat but sharp, casting crisp, elongated shadows of bicycle spokes against the wet cobblestones. In the background, a narrow gabled house with cream-colored stucco and dark timber framing stands stark against the gray sky. A pedestrian in a heavy wool coat walks past a shop window displaying folded linen linens, the soft fabric texture against the hard, slick pavement. The transient motion of urban life, with the cyclist’s bright color popping against the muted, damp tones of the canal bank and the weathered brickwork of the adjacent buildings.
