Cutting Fruit in Surabaya

Sunlight slants through the lattice of a Surabaya ruko, casting a sharp wicker shadow across stained beige plaster where a dark water mark blooms near the base. A vendor’s hand, calloused and dusted with flour, grips a heavy cleaver to slice through a pile of bright orange papayas on a scarred wooden counter. Beside the fruit, a cluster of potted geraniums spills over the edge of the stall, their red petals against the rough concrete pavement. In the background, the blurred motion of a motorcycle passes, kicking up a faint haze that softens the distant shop signs.
