Cross-Stitch Wildflowers on Aswan Pier Railing

by Alex McBride

Pale, dusty light bounces off weathered white walls to illuminate a wooden embroidery hoop centered in the frame. Inside the hoop, a half-finished cross-stitch pattern depicts wildflowers in threads of faded pink, sage green, and ochre against cream fabric. The work rests on the rough, sun-bleached rail of a pier structure near Aswan, where midsummer heat hangs heavy in the air. Fine particles of dust float in the shafts of indirect illumination, catching the eye as they drift past the intricate stitches. The wood of the hoop shows signs of age, its grain worn smooth by handling, against the fresh, tight tension of the thread. A small, loose thread end hangs from the bottom edge of the fabric, trembling slightly in the stillness.
