Flat noon light bleaches the interior of a cramped Nairobi hardware shop, revealing a chaotic wall of utility. Rusty tool pegboards dominate the back, their surfaces drilled with holes holding heavy-duty hooks and tangled lengths of wire. Below, a worn counter displays a cluster of daily necessities: a wooden mug tree holding chipped enamel cups, a ceramic sugar jar with a pearl-white rim catching the diffuse glare, and a bowl of bright orange carrots resting near a glass tumbler. A pin cushion sits abandoned near a stack of doormats, while whisks hang loosely from a hook, swaying slightly.
