Commuter at Early Morning Light

Cool early morning light spills through the high, arched windows of a Victorian train station platform, casting long, sharp shadows across the damp, grey granite paving. A lone commuter in a dark wool coat stands near a rusted iron bench, their breath faintly visible in the chill air. Behind them, the station’s original tiled walls, faded to a muted ochre, show the wear of a century of travel. A discarded blue and white porcelain jar, chipped at the rim, sits incongruously on a nearby ticket barrier, its glaze reflecting the pale sky.
