Colored Favela Facades in Vang Vieng Concrete Lobby
by Mei Fowler
Soft, diffused light from heavy overcast monsoon skies fills the ribbed concrete lobby in Vang Vieng, casting even illumination across the space. The textured gray ceiling features parallel ridges that run the length of the room. Against the stark architectural background, a vibrant display of colorful facades mimics a hillside favela, creating a striking visual contrast. The painted walls show varied hues of blue, yellow, and red arranged in dense, irregular patterns typical of informal settlements. These structures appear static and still, evoking clear ritual quietness within the industrial setting. Shadows remain soft and undefined due to the cloud cover, allowing the saturation of the colors to dominate the foreground. The interplay between the rough concrete ribs overhead and the detailed, multi-colored lower section creates a layered depth. A small patch of wet concrete near the base of the colorful wall reflects the muted sky above.
