Colonial Wall Detail in Salvador

by Yvonne Harrell

A weathered white stucco wall in the historic center of Salvador glows under the harsh, flat light of a winter noon, its surface textured by centuries of salt air and heat. A rusted iron wall sconce, bent slightly by time, hangs beside a small, cracked terracotta flowerpot holding a resilient green succulent. Below, a faded blue dish towel hangs loosely from a low wooden railing, its frayed edges catching the breeze. The rough twine fibers of a nearby basket are visible, tangled against the smooth, crazed majolica glaze of a ceramic tile fragment embedded in the wall.
