Colonial Architecture in Salvador

by Beverly Pittman

The deep indigo of Salvador’s blue hour settles over the Pelourinho district, casting long, cool shadows across the undulating cobblestone streets. A low stone wall anchors the foreground, its rough texture against the smooth, wet pavement reflecting the distant sodium glow of streetlamps. In the mid-ground, a cluster of colonial buildings with faded ochre facades and intricate iron balconies rise against the darkening sky, their silhouettes sharp and defined. One laundry line stretches between two windows, holding a few garments that catch the last ambient light, moving slightly in the coastal breeze. The horizon is low and dominated by the layered architecture, showing the verticality of the historic center against the vast, empty sky.
