Cloud Chamber Vapor Tracks in Amber Sunset Light
by Laura Combs
Rich amber sunset light floods the interior of a fossil preparation laboratory in Changchun, illuminating a physics cloud chamber at the center of the workspace. Delicate, thread-like vapor tracks spiral through the device's glass enclosure, glowing faintly against the deep blue internal illumination. The chamber rests on a metal workbench surrounded by scattered tools and fossil fragments wrapped in protective cloth. Soft reflections shimmer across the polished surfaces of nearby equipment and the glass walls of the chamber itself. Dust particles hang suspended in the copper-toned air, catching the fading daylight. The tracks vary in thickness and density, creating a complex web of ionized paths that stand out sharply against the cool blue background. A faint shadow of the chamber frame falls across the wooden edge of the table.
