Chipped Enamel Mugs in Paris
by Marta Welch
A row of chipped enamel mugs rests on a narrow stone ledge beneath a wrought-iron balcony railing, their white surfaces catching the deep blue twilight. Dried coffee stains mark the interior curves, against the smooth, cool metal of the railing that frames the view of the Parisian rooftops. Below, the faint glow of streetlamps begins to illuminate the wet cobblestones of the quiet courtyard, reflecting the soft ambient light. One mug sits slightly apart from the others, its handle turned outward toward the darkening sky.
