Children Playing Cricket in Dusty Kuala Lumpur Lot
by Barrett Roy
Sunlight falls through dense green foliage, creating shifting patches of bright yellow and deep shadow across the packed earth of a roadside clearing. Three children stand in a loose formation, their skin glistening with sweat under the midday heat. The boy in the center grips a wooden bat, his stance low and focused as he watches an invisible ball approach. Behind him, another child crouches in a ready fielding position, knees bent against the dusty ground. The air ripples with visible heat waves, and loose leaves scatter across the brown soil, caught in a sudden gust that whips the fronds of nearby palm trees. The edges of the lot fade into blurred concrete curbs and distant metal fences, at the base of the game in an urban fringe. A faint dust cloud rises from the batter's feet as he shifts his weight.
