In the dim pre-dawn light of a Chicago apartment kitchen, a worn counter holds a chipped blue enamel pot alongside a straight razor resting on a folded newspaper. A small hand mirror reflects the faint glow of a streetlamp through the window, casting long shadows across the linoleum floor. A simple wooden stool stands near the sink, its legs slightly uneven. A glass jar containing a few dried zinnias sits on the windowsill, their petals curled from age. Tool hooks hang loosely on the wall, one holding a single spoon. A drawer knob, brass and tarnished, gleams faintly in the low light.
