Chestnuts Roasted at Dawn in Corlu Market

Steam rises in thin, translucent ribbons from a large black iron pan resting on glowing embers. The vendor's hands move over the dark, glossy chestnuts, turning them against the rough, heat-darkened metal. Sidelight from the east skims across the coarse weave of the vendor's apron and the uneven surface of the spice sacks piled nearby. Piles of cinnamon sticks, dried red peppers, and bright yellow turmeric root create a mosaic of earth tones on the wooden table. Early autumn air hangs heavy with cooking smoke that drifts upward, catching the pale morning glow. The iron handle of the pan extends toward the edge of the frame, its metal worn smooth by years of use.
