Flat noon light bleaches the color from a Johannesburg street corner where a white minibus taxi idles beside a corrugated iron shack. The taxi’s rear gate handle glints under the harsh sun, against the dusty, faded paint of the vehicle’s side panel. A Chausie cat, sleek and alert, crouches on the low concrete curb, its striped fur blending with the cracked pavement. Behind the cat, a rack of colorful second-hand clothing hangs from a makeshift line, fluttering slightly in the dry heat. The raw texture of urban survival, with the cat’s intense gaze fixed on something beyond the frame, anchoring the chaotic composition of metal, fabric, and concrete.
