Cat Sleeping in São Paulo
by June Cote
Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast São Paulo midday, a corner of a busy boteco reveals a lived-in counter where a ceramic tile backsplash meets a stained wooden surface. A hand mirror rests haphazardly near a stack of napkins, reflecting the dull gray sky through the open doorway. Beside it, a small tabby cat sleeps curled around a mortar and pestle, its fur blending with the dust of the floor. The scene is anchored by the texture of cracked mosaic tile fragments scattered like confetti near the drain, while a trumpet mute sits forgotten on a high shelf, catching the ambient light. The composition balances the domestic clutter with the urban grit of the street outside.
