Carving Teak in Denpasar

Sunlight cuts sharply through the open shutter of a traditional Balinese joglo workshop, casting a bright, geometric stripe across the dusty concrete floor where a pair of worn sandals rests. An artisan sits cross-legged on a faded woven mat, his hands steady as he carves intricate floral motifs into a block of dark teak, wood shavings curling around his feet. In the corner, a cluster of potted geraniums in terracotta pots catches the harsh afternoon glare, their red blooms against the deep shadows of the interior. A glass tumbler of iced water sweats condensation on a nearby workbench, catching the light as a faint vibration from a passing motorbike outside ripples the surface.
