Warm golden light spills across the dark, hand-carved wood of a cuckoo clock resting on a museum plinth in Mekelle. The surface gleams with polished highlights where the sun strikes the intricate relief work. Two heavy pine cone weights hang suspended by thin chains, their rough, textured scales against the smooth, varnished curves of the clock face. The dry season air leaves the wood grain sharp and distinct, revealing deep grooves from the carving tools. Shadows stretch long across the clock's base, showing the three-dimensional depth of the figures. A small dust mote floats near the edge of the wooden birdhouse structure, caught in the shaft of light. at the edge is the sharp, reflective edge of a brass pendulum bob resting just below the carved foliage.
