Car Engine in Dakar
A mechanic in a faded blue jumpsuit crouches beside a rusted Peugeot 205 chassis, his hands deep in the engine bay where a socket wrench glints under the harsh Dakar sun. The workshop is an open-air shed with corrugated zinc walls, the floor stained with oil and red laterite dust. A frayed hemp rope hangs loosely from a wooden beam above, swaying slightly in the hot breeze. Nearby, a wicker basket holds spare spark plugs and a coil of wire, while a tabby cat sleeps on a pile of discarded tires in the shade. The light is bright and unforgiving, casting sharp shadows that define the curves of the car and the tension in the mechanic's shoulders.
