Café Counter in Istanbul
by Archer Cline
A weathered wooden counter in a Beyoğlu backstreet café holds a chipped white enamel mug and a rusted metal tin, their surfaces scarred by years of steam and grease. Outside the grimy window, a slush-covered sidewalk reflects the pale winter noon light, while a passerby in a bright orange coat strides past, blurring against the gray stone facade. Inside, a faded blue towel edge hangs loosely from a rail, dripping condensation onto a stack of mismatched plates. The gritty, lived-in reality of Istanbul’s winter days, where the warmth of the interior contrasts sharply with the damp chill outside, and the mundane objects tell a story of daily routine rather than staged elegance.
