Under the harsh, shadowless glare of a Perth midday, a weathered verandah wall in Fremantle is dominated by a burst of magenta bougainvillea spilling over a white picket fence. The intense sunlight bleaches the color from the surrounding rendered stucco, creating a stark contrast with the vibrant floral cluster. Below the flowers, a faded, patterned doormat lies flat against the concrete steps, its fibers absorbing the heat and casting no distinct shadow. A small, rusted coffee tin sits discarded near the door frame, its surface bleached by years of sun exposure. The quiet tension between the lush, tropical growth and the dry, bleached architecture typical of the region, with the flat light emphasizing texture over depth.
