Just after sunrise in Liverpool, a rusted boot scraper mounted on the pebbledash wall of a Victorian terrace house catches the first pale, cool light of the morning. The galvanized steel grate is worn smooth by years of muddy boots, contrasting sharply with the rough, cream-colored render that shows signs of damp staining near the base. A faded red brick pavement stretches into the background, leading toward a distant, blurred streetlamp that is still glowing faintly against the brightening sky. One drop of condensation rests on the lower edge of the scraper, reflecting the inverted image of the grey clouds above.
